Another Apple-Samsung skirmish heads to court
Headline News |
2014/03/31 14:50
|
The fiercest rivalry in the world of smartphones is heading back to court this week in the heart of the Silicon Valley, with Apple and Samsung accusing each other, once again, of ripping off designs and features.
The trial will mark the latest round in a long-running series of lawsuits between the two tech giants that underscore a much larger concern about what is allowed to be patented.
"There's a widespread suspicion that lots of the kinds of software patents at issue are written in ways that cover more ground than what Apple or any other tech firm actually invented," Notre Dame law professor Mark McKenna said. "Overly broad patents allow companies to block competition."
The latest Apple-Samsung case will be tried less than two years after a federal jury found Samsung was infringing on Apple patents. Samsung was ordered to pay about $900 million but is appealing and has been allowed to continue selling products using the technology.
Now, jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday in another round of litigation, with Apple Inc. accusing Samsung of infringing on five patents on newer devices, including Galaxy smartphones and tablets. In a counterclaim, Samsung says Apple stole two of its ideas to use on iPhones and iPads. |

Colo. court says lawyers can advise pot clients
Lawyer News |
2014/03/28 09:38
|
Colorado's Supreme Court says attorneys in the state can advise marijuana businesses on how to navigate the industry's legal complexities without fear of violating state ethics rules.
The court issued its rule change Monday. It offers attorneys assurance that they won't be punished solely for giving clients pot-related legal advice, as long as they believe those clients are operating legally. Attorneys are also required to advise clients about federal law and policy.
Colorado legalized recreational sales of the drug in January, but they remain illegal under federal law.
The court's attorney regulation counsel, James Coyle, says no lawyer has ever been sanctioned solely for giving legal advice, but concern about committing ethics violations remained. He says the rule change gives attorneys new guidance. |

Qatari court sentences US couple to 3 years jail
Court Watch |
2014/03/28 09:38
|
A Qatari court has sentenced an American couple charged with starving their 8-year-old adopted daughter to death to three years in prison and imposed a fine of $4,100.
Matthew and Grace Huang were jailed by Qatari authorities on murder charges in January 2013 following the death of their daughter, Gloria.
The Huangs said she died of medical problems complicated by unusual eating habits, including periods of self-starvation.
Their lawyer, Sami Abu Sheikha, says he will appeal and that the judge did not say what the couple was guilty of. The prosecutor had demanded the death penalty.
Judge Abdullah El-Emedy also ordered the Huangs deported from the Gulf country after serving their sentence.
Matthew Huang told reporters after Thursday's ruling that the charges and the case were "ridiculous." |
